Brighton’s independent shops are the reason people walk around here for hours without getting bored. The Lanes, North Laine and Kemptown each have their own character, and the mix of jewellers, vintage stores, record shops, bookshops and makers means you will find things you genuinely cannot buy anywhere else. This guide covers the best independent shops in Brighton by neighbourhood, what each area is like to browse, and a walking route that connects them.

The Lanes

The Lanes is a maze of narrow alleys between the seafront and North Street, packed with small shops that lean towards jewellery, gifts and specialist fashion. It rewards slow browsing rather than a focused mission. The streets are atmospheric, the shopfronts are part of the experience, and you will find things tucked into corners that you would miss if you rushed.

The Lanes is where you will find independent shops in Brighton that are harder to categorise: specialist tea shops, artisan soap makers, jewellers, small galleries and one-off boutiques that change stock frequently. The area is best explored without a fixed plan.

North Laine

North Laine is the area between the station and the Lanes, centred on Kensington Gardens, Gardner Street, Sydney Street and the surrounding streets. It has a more alternative, creative feel than the Lanes and is where most of the vintage, music and maker shops are concentrated.

Posh Totty Designs on Sydney Street specialises in personalised jewellery and is popular for gifts. Silverado on Bond Street sells silver jewellery and accessories from a small, well-stocked shop.

Snoopers Paradise at 7-8 Kensington Gardens is a Brighton institution. It is a 7,000 square foot indoor flea market with over 90 stalls selling vintage furniture, clothing, records, cameras, curiosities and everything in between. The upstairs section, Snoopers Attic, focuses on vintage clothing. Plan to spend at least an hour here.

Resident Music at 27-28 Kensington Gardens is an award-winning independent record shop that has been running since 2004. It stocks vinyl, CDs and music books, and hosts regular in-store events including live performances and signings. It is a few doors down from Snoopers Paradise.

Dowse on Gardner Street sells contemporary homeware and art prints from independent designers and makers. Tidy Street Store was formerly a Brighton shop but moved online in 2026, so check its website rather than planning a physical visit.

North Laine also has outdoor stalls, and Upper Gardner Street has a Saturday market with independent traders and second-hand finds.

Kemptown

Kemptown is quieter and more residential than the Lanes or North Laine, with independent shops in Brighton concentrated along St George’s Road and St James’s Street. The pace is slower and the shops tend towards antiques, books and eclectic homewares.

Kemptown Trading Post at 27 St George’s Road sells antiques, vintage furniture and decorative items. The Kemptown Bookshop at 91 St George’s Road is a proper independent bookshop with a good general selection and a focus on literary gifts.

Kemptown is a good area to combine shopping with a cafe stop or a walk along the seafront towards the Marina.

A Walking Route

Start at Kemptown on St George’s Road for the Trading Post and the Bookshop. Walk west along the seafront or through the side streets to The Lanes for a browse through the jewellers and small boutiques. Continue north into North Laine for Posh Totty Designs, Silverado, Snoopers Paradise, Resident Music and Dowse. The whole route takes about 90 minutes of walking, not counting browsing time. North Laine is the area where you will spend the most time.

If you are arriving by train, reverse the route: start in North Laine (it is a 5-minute walk from the station), then head south into the Lanes and east to Kemptown.

Practical Tips

Most independent shops in Brighton open between 10am and 6pm, with shorter hours on Sundays. Weekday mornings are quieter for browsing. Weekends bring more market stalls and street activity in North Laine but also bigger crowds.

Stock changes frequently, especially in vintage and maker shops, so repeat visits are worth it if you live locally or visit regularly.

If you are looking for gifts, the Lanes and North Laine are the strongest areas. If you are looking for vintage and second-hand, North Laine and Kemptown are better. For records specifically, Kensington Gardens in North Laine is the street to head for.
