Brighton has something happening almost every month. The problem is not finding events. It is knowing which ones are worth planning a trip around and which months to avoid if you want a quieter visit. This Brighton events calendar covers the annual events that happen every year, organised month by month, so you can plan ahead whether you are visiting for a weekend or deciding when to book a longer stay.
Most of these events recur annually on similar dates. Where specific dates are confirmed, they are listed. Where dates vary year to year, the typical month is given. Always check the official event websites closer to the time as schedules can shift.

Month by Month

January and February
The quietest months in Brighton. There are no major annual events, which makes it the best time to visit if you want the city without the crowds. Restaurants are easier to book, the seafront is peaceful and accommodation is at its cheapest. Some smaller cultural events and film screenings run through these months, but nothing that would justify planning a trip specifically around them.
March
March is still quieter than spring and summer, but Brighton Half Marathon is the main annual event to know about. The 2026 race took place on Sunday 1 March, with the route using the seafront and city roads. It is free to watch, but road closures can affect travel around Brighton and Hove on race day.
April
Brighton Marathon takes place on a Sunday in April, typically the second weekend. The 2026 edition was on 12 April. It is the UK’s third largest marathon and the flat coastal course draws up to 20,000 participants across the marathon, the 10K and the Brighton Miles events. The route runs through Brighton and Hove before finishing along the seafront near Hove Lawns. It is free to watch and the crowd support along the route is one of the best things about the day, even if you are not running.
Road closures affect much of the city on race day, so plan around them if you are visiting that weekend for other reasons.
May
The busiest month in the Brighton events calendar by a significant margin. Four major events overlap, and the city is noticeably busier than any other time outside of Pride weekend.
Brighton Festival is England’s largest curated multi-arts festival, running for three weeks in May. The 2026 edition ran from 1 to 25 May. The programme includes theatre, music, dance, literature, art and outdoor events across venues throughout the city. Some events are free, others are ticketed. The quality is high and the range is broad enough that there is usually something for everyone.
Brighton Fringe runs alongside the Festival and is one of the largest open-access arts festivals in the world. Anyone can put on a show, and hundreds do. Comedy, theatre, music, cabaret, spoken word, immersive experiences and children’s shows appear in pubs, churches, pop-up venues and any space with a plug socket and some chairs. In 2026, Brighton Fringe runs until 31 May. Quality varies but that is the point. You will see brilliant things for very little money.
The Great Escape is a new music festival that takes over venues across central Brighton for four days in the middle of May. The 2026 edition ran from 13 to 16 May. Over 450 emerging artists play across 30 or more walkable venues. This is where you hear bands that headline larger festivals a year or two later. It is ticketed and sells out.
Artists Open Houses runs across selected weekends in May, with a winter edition usually held later in the year. Artists across Brighton and Hove open their homes and studios as mini galleries. You can wander different neighbourhoods, meet the makers and buy original art, ceramics, jewellery and prints directly. It is free, informal and one of the most genuinely Brighton experiences you can have.
If you are planning a visit to Brighton and want the city at its most alive, the first two weeks of May are hard to beat.
June
The gap between the May festivals and the main summer events. In 2026, Brighton Fringe runs until 31 May, so June is generally the gap between the May festivals and the main summer events. The weather is usually good, the city is busy but not overwhelmed, and it is a solid time to visit without needing to plan around anything specific.
July
On The Beach is a series of seafront concerts that typically span two weekends in July. Major acts play on Hove seafront with the sea as a backdrop. The lineup changes each year. This has become one of Brighton’s biggest summer draws and tickets sell quickly for headline dates.
Brighton Kite Festival has traditionally been associated with Stanmer Park in July, but check current listings before planning around it, as confirmed dates are not always easy to verify.
August
Brighton Pride is the UK’s largest LGBTQ+ Pride festival and the single busiest weekend in Brighton’s year. The 2026 parade takes place on the first weekend of August, with the main park events in Preston Park. The parade through the city is free to watch and draws over 300,000 people. The park events are ticketed with major headline acts.
Hotels sell out months in advance for Pride weekend. If you want to be in Brighton for Pride, book accommodation as early as possible. Kemptown is the heart of Brighton’s LGBTQ+ scene and the centre of the action during Pride week. If you want to avoid the busiest weekend of the year, check the dates and plan around them.
Trans Pride Brighton also takes place in the summer, typically in the weeks before the main Pride event. It is the largest Trans Pride event outside of America.
September and October
The summer crowds thin out and the city returns to a more local pace. September is one of the best months to visit if you want good weather, a lively city and fewer tourists than the summer peak. Open-air comedy shows sometimes run in Preston Park during the warmer months, but dates vary year to year so check listings.
November
London to Brighton Veteran Car Run takes place on the first Sunday in November. The 2026 edition is on 1 November. Pre-1905 vehicles drive from Hyde Park in London to Madeira Drive in Brighton. It is the oldest motoring event in the world and free to watch on the seafront. The cars are beautiful and eccentric and the atmosphere is relaxed.
Artists Open Houses runs again later in the year, with a winter edition that is good for buying handmade gifts directly from local artists and makers.
CINECITY Brighton Film Festival typically runs in November, screening new and independent films across venues in the city.
December
Burning the Clocks takes place on 21 December, the Winter Solstice. It is a community lantern parade through the city that ends with the lanterns being burned on the beach, followed by fireworks. It is free, atmospheric and unlike anything else in Brighton. Same Sky has confirmed that Burning the Clocks paused in 2025 and is due to return in full in 2026.
Brighton also hosts seasonal Christmas events throughout December, including festive markets and shopping events across the city. Specific locations and dates change each year, so check closer to the time.
Practical Tips

Book accommodation early for Pride weekend. This is the single most important tip in this guide. Pride weekend fills the city and prices rise sharply. Book months ahead.
May is brilliant but busy. If you want to experience Festival, Fringe and The Great Escape, plan ahead for accommodation and tickets. If you want a quieter visit, avoid the first three weeks of May.
Many events are free. The Marathon, Burning the Clocks, Artists Open Houses, the Veteran Car Run and the Pride parade are all free to watch or attend. The Brighton events calendar does not require a big budget.
Check official event websites for exact dates. Most annual events fall on similar dates each year but can shift. The official event websites will give you the latest confirmed schedules.

Final Thoughts

The Brighton events calendar runs from March to December with barely a gap. The city’s year is shaped by these recurring events, and knowing when they fall makes the difference between a well-timed visit and an unexpectedly crowded one. May and August are the peaks. January and February are the gaps. Everything else falls somewhere in between.
