Climbing in Brighton is centred on two dedicated indoor venues, and they offer different things. Boulder Brighton in Portslade is bouldering only: low-level climbing over matting, no ropes, no harnesses. High Sports at Withdean combines bouldering, auto belays and roped climbing on walls reaching 13 metres.
A complete beginner can boulder at either after the registration and safety steps, and neither requires a course first. What differs is what happens when you want to go higher. At High Sports a £19 auto-belay induction gets you onto the full-height walls without a partner or rope skills. The £75 weekend course covers knots, belaying and top-rope climbing, and experienced rope climbers who pass the safety test do not need it.
This guide covers both centres, what each costs, what you have to do before your first session, and where the outdoor climbing near Brighton actually is.

Boulder Brighton
Boulder Brighton sits on the Victoria Road Trading Estate in Portslade, five minutes’ walk from Portslade station. With no ropes or harnesses, there is no equipment to learn before you start.
Their homepage advertises 250 climbs across vertical walls, overhangs, slabs, a roof and cave section, including the top-out boulder The Duck, with new problems weekly, plus a cafe, shop, showers, yoga and physio.
Entry is £13 at peak and £9.75 off-peak, with concessions at £11 and £8.25. Climbing shoes are £3.90 to hire and you will need them, since outdoor shoes are not allowed on the walls. Chalk is £1.60. Card payments only, as they stopped taking cash in November 2023. Open 6am to 10pm Tuesday to Friday, 8am to 10pm Saturday to Monday.
Boulder Brighton ask first-time visitors to book a First Time Climb: two hours including a 15 minute induction, shoe hire included, and it qualifies you to return on your own. They warn that pay-as-you-go slots “do regularly sell out” at peak times. Members and multipack holders can walk in, and an experienced climber there can bring up to two novices along, who pay ordinary entry plus shoe hire, £13.65 off peak. Minimum age is 7, with supervisor-only entry at £3.50 if you are watching rather than climbing. The ratio is one non-climbing adult per two children or one climbing adult per child, one-to-one recommended under 9.
For regulars the maths shifts. A recurring membership is £50 a month on a three-month minimum, and ten entries is £110. Their prices page reckons three sessions a week works out around £4 a go. There is also a Youth Boulderers Award for 12 to 15 year olds, a four-week-plus programme that lets them climb unsupervised afterwards with parental permission.
High Sports
High Sports combines bouldering, auto belays and roped climbing, inside Withdean Sports Complex on Tongdean Lane. Walls reach 13 metres, with two bouldering areas and a training area. Their pages give conflicting totals for rope lines, auto-belay lines and boulder problems, so treat any single figure with caution. It is a registered GB Paraclimbing Team training facility.
Adult single entry is £14.50 at peak and £12.50 off-peak. Peak runs 5pm to 10pm on weekdays and all day at weekends and bank holidays. Shoe hire is £3.95, a harness £4.80, or £8 for both. A ten-entry adult block is £125.
There are three routes in for beginners:
- Taster session, £24. One hour trying all three forms. It also leaves you able to supervise up to two novices or children on the boulders and auto belays.
- Auto-belay induction, £19. Half an hour covering the auto belays and the bouldering area, after which you can use both independently. Auto belays are devices fixed at the top of the wall that catch you and lower you down, so you climb the full height without a partner.
- Beginners course, £75. A weekend covering bouldering, auto belays and top rope climbing, including knots and belaying, which leaves you ready to take the centre’s safety check and be signed off to use the bouldering, auto-belay and top-rope areas independently. Adults only, 18 and over.
Experienced climbers may not need any of these. Their page says there is no need to book if you can pass the safety test: connecting to an auto belay, fitting a harness, tying in with a suitable knot and belaying in an approved manner. That is a rope-skills test, and not everyone faces it. Everyone climbing without an instructor watches the boulder safety video, answers competency questions during registration and is tested on arrival. What you are tested on scales with what you want to use, so a boulderer is never asked to demonstrate rope skills.
Age four is the youngest. For 4 to 7 year olds the instructed options are the Mini Taster, an hour at £22 with four children per instructor, and the weekly Wild Climbers club, with NICAS courses for 7 and over above. Instruction is not compulsory though: under-14s can climb without one as long as an appropriately experienced adult supervises.
Teenagers are where the rules get specific. Unsupervised climbing needs their Youth Climbing Assessment, and which one depends on age and discipline. For 14 and 15 year olds an assessment is required for everything, including bouldering. 16 and 17 year olds can boulder without one, but need a parental consent form completed before the first visit, with both climber and parent having watched the safety video. Auto belay, top rope and lead still need the relevant assessment at that age. Assessments take 30 to 60 minutes depending on discipline, with a parent present.
An appropriately experienced adult may supervise up to two novice or junior climbers and must stay actively involved throughout; three or more need a qualified instructor. An adult who has never climbed can qualify to supervise on the boulders and auto belays through the £19 induction or the £24 taster. Supervising on top rope means the beginners course and then the safety test.
Parking at Withdean is free for the first three hours for climbers, the complex is ten minutes from Preston Park station, and the 27 bus stops outside. Ownership changed in July 2025, when High Sports came under the same owners as Volume 1 Climbing in East Grinstead.
Also Worth Knowing

Register before you arrive. Both centres need a form and both let you do it online.
Budget for shoes. Boulder Brighton bans outdoor shoes on the walls, so hire at £3.90 is compulsory unless you own a pair. High Sports charges £3.95, or £8 with a harness.
The technical barrier differs. Bouldering at either centre needs no ropes, harness or partner. At High Sports, the £19 induction and the £24 taster both cover bouldering and the auto belays, while independent top-rope climbing needs the £75 course and sign-off. Experienced climbers demonstrate competence instead.
Off-peak saves 25% at Boulder Brighton. £13 drops to £9.75, and they run quiet mornings from 6am to 9am on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the music off.
Concessions are worth checking. Boulder Brighton’s concession rate covers full-time students with ID, NHS staff, people who are unemployed and over-65s, with youth aged 7 to 15 priced separately. Useful on a student budget.
Outdoor Climbing Near Brighton

It exists, but it is committing sea-cliff climbing, not an outdoor beginner session. The BMC’s Regional Access Database lists 52 routes at Saltdean, split between traditional Dover-style ice climbing on chalk and sport-chalk routes using pre-placed gear and lower-offs.
The Climbers’ Club guide describes the in-situ protection as having “always been regarded as questionable, due to the nature of the chalk itself”, and says none of it has ever been officially tested. UKClimbing goes further: the gear is not BMC-maintained, and several named routes have since fallen down.
The access rules are firm too: the BMC asks climbers to phone the Solent Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre before and after climbing. The cliffs from Brighton to Newhaven are an SSSI with uncommon plants and breeding seabirds, and nesting restrictions change, so check the current BMC access page before travelling.
Southern Sandstone on the Kent and East Sussex border is the other established option, and Stone Farm Rocks near East Grinstead has been BMC-owned since 2001. The rock is soft and erodes easily, so the Southern Sandstone Code of Practice applies: top-roping, bouldering or soloing only, no lead climbing, a non-stretch belay rigged so the moving rope never touches the rock, walk off rather than lowering off, minimal chalk, and nothing at all on wet rock. The bolted-anchor method changed in 2021, so read the BMC’s current guidance rather than an older description.
Closer to home, Hove Park has a council-installed artificial climbing boulder, installed in summer 2005 and open to everyone. If it is simply the outdoors you want, the walks near Brighton are the easier answer.
FAQs
How much does climbing in Brighton cost?
Boulder Brighton is £13 at peak and £9.75 off-peak for adults, with concessions at £11 and £8.25. High Sports is £14.50 peak and £12.50 off-peak. Add shoe hire, £3.90 at Boulder Brighton and £3.95 at High Sports, if you do not own a pair.
Do you need experience to go bouldering?
No. Bouldering needs no rope or belay equipment, though you still register and answer some competency questions. Boulder Brighton recommend a First Time Climb, and High Sports run a £24 taster covering all three forms.
What is the difference between bouldering and climbing?
High Sports treats them as three separate things. Bouldering is done low down over matting with nothing but shoes. Auto-belay climbing uses a harness and a device that catches and lowers you, so no partner is needed. Top-rope climbing needs a rope and a competent belayer. Boulder Brighton does bouldering only.
What age can children start climbing in Brighton?
High Sports takes children from age 4, either through an instructed session such as the £22 Mini Taster or with an appropriately experienced adult supervising them. Boulder Brighton takes children from 7 with an adult supervising. For unsupervised climbing at High Sports, 14 and 15 year olds need a Youth Climbing Assessment for everything including bouldering, while 16 and 17 year olds can boulder with a parental consent form but need an assessment for ropes and auto belays.
Do you need to book climbing in Brighton in advance?
Boulder Brighton say pay-as-you-go sessions should be booked ahead and peak slots regularly sell out, though members and multipack holders can walk in. At High Sports, tasters, inductions and courses are booked. Independent climbers register, watch the safety video and answer competency questions, then are tested on arrival, with rope climbers taking the full safety test.
Is there outdoor climbing near Brighton?
Yes, but it is specialist. The BMC lists 52 chalk routes at Saltdean, asks climbers to notify the Solent coastguard before and after, and the cliffs are an SSSI. Southern Sandstone on the Kent and East Sussex border is the other option, though the rock is fragile and the code applies.
Final Thoughts

Climbing in Brighton splits cleanly. If you have never climbed, start at Boulder Brighton with a First Time Climb. Two hours, shoe hire included, no course and no partner required, and you can come back on your own after that.
If you want height, High Sports has the auto belays and roped climbing. Four to seven year olds can be booked onto an instructed session or supervised by an experienced adult. Adult beginners pick between the £19 induction and the £24 taster, which both open up bouldering and the auto belays, though only the taster includes a go on the ropes. The £75 course is the route to independent top rope. Experienced rope climbers who pass the safety test need none of them.
Whichever you pick, register online first, budget for shoe hire, and check peak and off-peak times before you travel.
