Last Updated on 19 May 2026 by Dave King

Brighton’s main emergency hospital campus is on Eastern Road. Adult A&E is at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, children’s A&E is at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, and urgent eye emergencies are handled by Sussex Eye Hospital. Brighton also has a walk-in centre for non-emergencies, a community health site for outpatient services, and two main multi-specialty private hospitals. If you are visiting or new to the area, knowing which hospitals in Brighton handle what can save you time and stress.

This guide covers what each one does, where they are, and when to use which. If you need adult emergency care, go to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. For children, use the children’s A&E at Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital. For urgent eye problems, use Sussex Eye Hospital. If it is urgent but not life-threatening, the walk-in centre at Brighton Station is open every day. For everything else, start with your GP or call 111.

Royal Sussex County Hospital

The Royal Sussex County Hospital on Eastern Road is Brighton’s main hospital. It is an acute teaching hospital and a major trauma centre, managed by University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. It has a 24-hour A&E department and provides emergency care, planned surgery, cancer treatment, cardiac surgery, maternity services and neonatal intensive care.

The Louisa Martindale Building, a new ward and clinical building on the site, is now open. It is now the hospital’s main entrance and is home to 28 clinical wards and departments.

Bus route 7 runs directly from Brighton Station to the hospital. If you need information on accessible routes around the city, there is a separate guide on this site. Parking is available at the hospital, including the Louisa Martindale Building underground car park accessed from Bristol Gate. The North Car Park uses an ANPR parking system. Visiting times vary by ward, so check the ward before travelling. UHSussex patient information gives general visiting times as 3pm to 8pm for some Royal Sussex wards.
